MoMa New York opens Quay Brothers: On Deciphering the Pharmacist’s Prescription for Lip-Reading Puppets

Finally, after years of hard work in animation Stephen and Timothy Quay, better known as The Brothers Quay are able today to reap what sow. The brothers of the stop-motion film noir in color it will be rewarded with a great retrospective at MoMA in New York, the exhibition was opened on August 12 and will remain on display until January 7, 2012. The style of the two brothers is characterized by a strong appeal to the films of Jan Svankmajer. Most of their production is made of doll parts, and organic material enclosed in a gloomy atmosphere. Their most famous work is Street Of Crocodiles, based on the short story by Bruno Schulz of the same title. Usually the films by Brothers Quay have no dialogue but are based on music composed by the avant-garde composer Leszek Jankowski.Finalmente, dopo anni di duro lavoro nel campo dell’animazione Stephen e Timothy Quay, meglio noti come The Brothers Quay riescono oggi a raccogliere quanto seminato. I fratellini dello stop and motion a tinte noir saranno infatti premiati con una bella retrospettiva al MoMa di New York, la mostra si è aperta lo scorso 12 agosto e rimarrà in visione sino al prossimo 7 gennaio 2012. Lo stile dei due fratelli è caratterizzato da un forte richiamo al cinema di Jan Švankmajer. La maggior parte della loro produzione è realizzata con parti di bambole e materiali organici racchiusi all’interno di un’atmosfera cupa. La loro opera più celebre è Street Of Crocodiles, basata sul racconto breve di Bruno Schulz dello stesso titolo. Salvo rarissimi eccezioni i film dei Brothers Quay non hanno dialoghi ma si basano su musiche ad effetto composte dall’avanguardista Leszek Jankowski.
